JOHANNESBURG – Mitsubishi Motors SA has updated their Triton bakkie range for 2026 with the exciting new Triton Bi-Turbo and stylish Triton GLS, which ensure that the Triton offering continues to perfectly meet the needs and desires of South African bakkie customers.
The evolution of the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton continues with the addition of the all-new Triton Bi-Turbo. This model, which has been specially developed for the South African market, is ready to write a new chapter in the Triton legacy.
“We are excited to welcome the Triton Bi-Turbo to our local line up, offering additional performance, refined driving dynamics and advanced technology,” says Lerato Nonyane, General Manager: Product & Marketing at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa (MMSA).
In addition to enhanced power and torque the Triton Bi-Turbo offers sportier styling and improved safety thanks to the fitment of the Mitsubishi Safety Sensing Suite.
“The new additions to the Triton range have been done while retaining the products value for money characteristic, with extremely competitive pricing given the additional features and technology that are included as standard,” explains Nonyane.
A sportier exterior
The Mitsubishi Triton Bi-Turbo elevates the Triton’s robust design with a variety of sporty elements, culminating in an imposing look that expresses the toughness expected of a bakkie.
The Dynamic Shield concept forms the foundation for the frontal design and is optimised with a powerful form that incorporates a robust, three-dimensional front grille, fenders and lower protector. The daytime running lights comprise of three L-shaped LED lights which in combination with the three-light lower headlights ensure a unique presence.
Large solid surfaces along the side accentuate the powerful form before flowing into T-shaped tail lights that emphasise the width of the rear end.
Additional standard equipment, now fitted to the Triton Bi-Turbo, includes roof rails, a styling bar, heated door mirrors and an assisted rear tailgate, which improves access to the load bin.
More power and torque
The biggest update is under the bonnet, where the 2.4-litre 4N16 DI-DC Bi-Turbo diesel engine and its two-stage turbocharger have been fine tuned to unlock additional power and torque. The result is an impressive 150kW at 3 500rpm and 470Nm between 1 500 and 2 750rpm, which completely transforms the driving experience while retaining the driveability for which the Triton is renowned.
The Bi-Turbo setup comprises of a smaller turbine that provides immediate low-speed response, effectively reducing lag, while a second larger turbine sustains high-end boost. The Triton Bi-Turbo offers enhanced acceleration as well as improved power and torque outputs across the entire speed range.
Power is transferred to the wheels via a smooth shifting six-speed automatic transmission. The Triton Bi-Turbo will be available exclusively with Mitsubishi’s renowned Super Select II 4WD system, which incorporates a rear differential lock. This system has been instrumental in cementing the Triton’s reputation for unrivalled off-road capability.
Seven selectable drive modes allow the driver to tailor the Super Select II system as well as the power delivery to their preferences and the driving conditions.
One of the key advantages of Super Select II is its ability to seamlessly adapt to changing conditions. Unlike conventional part-time 4WD systems, Super Select II allows the driver to select 4H on the move at speeds of up to 100 km/h, giving added confidence when the road surface becomes wet, slippery or unpredictable. In heavy rain, on wet tar, gravel or other low-grip surfaces, 4H distributes drive between the front and rear wheels, helping support traction, stability and driver confidence.
This makes the Triton Bi-Turbo particularly well suited to South African driving conditions, where a normal daily drive can quickly turn into a wet-weather, gravel-road or long-distance towing challenge.
Under the skin, a variety of suspension and handling improvements ensure that the Triton remains as well balanced as always, while effectively transferring the additional power and torque to the wheels. Electric power steering facilitates more precise steering inputs.
As has always been the case with the Triton, this latest Bi-Turbo iteration is ready for both work and play as it boasts a 3.5 tonne towing capacity and a 1 000kg payload rating.
Technology and Connectivity
Inside, the Triton Bi-Turbo steps things up with premium touches and additional equipment, that will make every drive, long or short more enjoyable for the driver and their passengers.
A leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift knob as well as synthetic leather seats incorporating a suede knit with quilting, offer more premium touch points. Carpet flooring adds a premium touch to the hardworking cab underfoot. Keeping occupants comfortable is dual zone climate control. Driver and passenger vanity mirrors with lids as well as an upper glove box further elevate the already practical interior. A dimming rear view mirror enhances the night time driving experience.
The infotainment offering has been elevated significantly with the fitment of a nine-inch touchscreen Smartphone-Link Display Audio system, a seven-inch digital driver’s display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a six-speaker sound system.
Safety enhancements
The Triton Bi-Turbo has received a major upgrade in the safety department, thanks to the fitment of the Mitsubishi Motors Safety sensing suite, which comprises of a long list of driver assistance features that elevate the safety of this bakkie to a completely new level.
These systems include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with steering switch, Automatic High beam (AHB), Forward Collision Mitigation system (FCM) with pedestrian detection, Lane Change Assist (LCA), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Parking Sensor (Front & rear). The Triton Bi-Turbo also benefits from the fitment of a Multi Around Monitor System.
GLS models go dark
As part of the 2026 Triton range update, Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has also refined the Triton GLS models with a darker exterior appearance.
The fog lamp bezels, door handles, side steps, rear gate handle and garnish are now finished in material black. The front bumper garnish, rear bumper, door mirrors and 18-inch alloy wheels now feature a metallic black look, while the inner housing of the rear combination lamps has also been blacked out. These updates give GLS models a more assertive appearance, with no change to pricing.
“The South African bakkie customer continues to evolve, with buyers expecting more than ever before. Today's customers demand capability, bold styling, advanced technology, comfort and outstanding value. The updated Triton range, spearheaded by the new Bi-Turbo, delivers on every one of these expectations,” explains Nonyane.
“This is done while emphasising the characteristics that have made the Triton the legend that it is, including unrivalled off-road pedigree thanks to the renowned Super Select 4WD system and the nameplates reputation for durability and reliability that has been proven over many years,” concludes Nonyane.
AXCR-winning Triton toughness
Mitsubishi have a proud history of cross-country racing, which started when the Pajero dominated the Dakar Rally with 12 overall victories.
Today, the Triton continues to prove itself in some of the world’s most demanding environments. Team Mitsubishi Ralliart claimed overall victory at the 2025 Asia Cross Country Rally with the Triton rally bakkie, reinforcing the strength, reliability and off-road capability associated with the model.
For 2026, Team Mitsubishi Ralliart returns to AXCR with a team of three Tritons as it targets a second consecutive title in one of Asia’s toughest cross-country events.
